Big Travel Magazine Database News! (And a little anniversary celebration)


We’re nearly halfway through the year, and the Travel Magazine Database has been publishing a new full magazine breakdown every day, covering everything you need to know about:

  • which parts of each magazine are open to freelancers
  • the exact requirements for each section open to freelancers
  • what they’ve covered in these sections in the past
  • how to reach out to the magazine’s editors directly
  • and more!

In December and January, we also ran two rounds of searches for new writers for the database and have been delighted to add new writers to the team to keep the new magazines rolling your way.

We’re also bringing on a new office manager to help support Travel Magazine Database customers and get updates out via Facebook, Twitter, and email on the new magazines we add to the database each week.

But that means that we’ve added more than one hundred new magazines to the database that you might not have heard about, so we wanted to pull them all together so you can easily see what’s new and check out magazines that interest you by topic.

How to Research on the Road and Find Salable Ideas While Traveling

When it comes to article ideas, I’m a bit of a pack rat.

Okay “a bit ” might be a bit of an understatement.

I have article ideas squirreled away eve rywhere :

  • my main inbox is full of them
  • my to do app has hundreds in the “Pitches” section
  • my personal email that I used as my freelance email when I started out has a few hundred
  • the other email address that I set up just to capture pitch ideas has around 400
  • and the notes that I take during trips and walking tours have thousands more that I haven’t extracted from those longer lists of trip notes

How to Hone Your Article Ideas to Perfectly Fit Each Publication

But I’ve always found, especially with writers new to pitching magazines, that this process of thinking, on your own, what can fit into a magazine is potentially very destructive.

You run the risk of getting addicted to an article idea that simply doesn’t or wouldn’t fit into a magazine that will pay you for your words.

How to Extract the Maximum Number of Articles from Each Trip


When we did our first couple travel writer focus groups, something really struck me about how many articles successful travel writers, as opposed to struggling (income-wise) travel writers, write from each trip.

I find that a lot of travel writers who aren’t happy with their income or still have a full-time job in another profession and haven’t broken out to make travel writing their full-time gig are essentially getting one paid article from each trip.
